Hi! My name is Alyssa Kaplan and I live every day waiting to fly 3,000 miles from California to get back to camp! This coming summer will be my 12th summer returning to camp! I am so fortunate to have this special place because my mom and uncles went to Timber Tops and Lake Owego growing up. I was practically born ready to be a Timber Tops girl, as there are pictures of me in a diaper next to Missy and Andy’s cabin! To this day my room at home and my college dorm are both decorated by camp plaques, stickers, memorabilia, and photos.
As much as I loved my days a camper (and trust me, that was a lot), being a counselor is even better; I never thought that was possible! I will be returning for my 3rd summer as one of the dance counselors! My past two summers working have been so rewarding in so many ways. As a counselor you are so much more then just a supervisor or the leader of your activity. You become a role model, mentor, and surrogate mom for these girls. It does not matter if they are in the youngest or the oldest bunk in camp, your campers will look up to you and note your every move. I know this because I was that camper that thought my counselors were the coolest human beings ever, and I want to follow in their footsteps to make an impression on my campers the way they did me. The bond you make with your girls is my favorite part of being a counselor.
It is safe to say that there is no place like Camp Timber Tops, no place where you laugh and smile and sing as often as you do at camp. I met my absolute best friends twelve summers ago and talk to them still every day! Camp is a part of me and I hope that anyone who drives down that winding road grows to see it become a part of herself too.
