We spend a lot of time discussing old traditions at camp, but there were two new happenings down the winding road today that we think are worth mentioning.
Let’s preface this first item by talking about our staple camp meals. Though our salad bar gets better and more spectacular every year (think hummus, egg salad, tuna salad, kale salad, feta, and even avocado toast), we count on the tried and true camp go-tos. Pizza, quesadillas, burgers and hot dogs and more. But today? The dawning of a new camp meal. Caesar chicken salad wraps?! Buffalo chicken wraps?! WHAT?! We had even happier campers than usual. In short, lunch was delicious, moms and dads.
Our other, probably more exciting “first” today was boat racing on Mitchell’s Creek! We’re used to creek stomping in this favorite camp spot, but boat building and racing? Unbelievable! Interested juniors elected “Outdoor Rec” for 1st or 4th period and quickly made their way down the winding road to the creek. There, they gathered materials and built the best handmade boats we’ve ever seen at Timber Tops (okay, they were the only handmade boats we’ve seen at Timber Tops). When construction was complete it was time to race. The winners’ boats made it down the creek in 30 seconds. Absolutely amazing. We had a lot of happy (and wet) juniors at camp today. In fact, they asked if we could boat-build and race every day! Unfortunately, we have too many other outdoor recreation activities in store for these next few weeks, and we know they will be just as fantastic as boat building. Outdoor Rec is a favorite junior choice at camp this summer!
Other highlights of the day included lip sync practice (tomorrow for seniors!), rumblings of Pioneer Days (it’s coming!), and banquet prep in full swing (thanks, 9th graders)! All in all, in short, another beautiful day in downtown Greeley.
